Situation in Darjeeling Continues to be Tense

New Delhi:  The situation in West Bengal`s Darjeeling hills continued to be tense. A day after Darjeeling and adjoining areas that witnessed sporadic clashes, where the GJM supporters were protesting against alleged "imposition of Bengali language in the schools in the hills" on Thursday. 

The areas remained tense on Friday and Over 10,000 tourists were stranded in Darjeeling as GorkhaJanmuktiMorcha has called for 'bandh' till 6 pm in protest against lathicharge on its supporters. Even as a team of special auditors appointed by the Bengal Government to probe the finances of GJM-ruled Gorkhaland Territorial Authority reached the disturbed zone.

Seven Labour, five Tory MPs of Indian origin enter British parliament

New Delhi: Britain on Friday got its first female Sikh MP and first turban-wearing MP as the UK general election results threw up a small increase in the number of Indian-origin MPs in the House of Commons. 

The latest tally indicates the Labour party improved its record from five to seven MPs, with the Tories retaining their five Indian-origin MPs taking the total number up from 10 in the 2015 general election to 12. Labour's PreetKaur Gill won her Birmingham Edgbaston seat by polling 24,124 votes, defeating her Conservative party rival by 6,917 votes.

Modi exhorts world leaders to unite in fight against terrorism

New Delhi: Prime minister NarendraModi made an appeal to world leaders to fight out the menace of terrorism in any form and said concerted efforts are required to find a solution to recruitment , training and financing of terrorists. Addressing the 17th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Kazakhstan capital Astana on Friday, Modi said terrorism was a major threat to humanity.

Modi said India gives utmost priority to increase connectivity among SCO countries and asserted that India would continue to work together with them. He said SCO can also focus attention to address the problem of climate change.

Supreme Court orders partial stay on Aadhaar-PAN linking

New Delhi: A Supreme Court bench comprising Justices A.K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan today announced its verdict on the mandatory linking of Aadhaar and PAN. The Court put partial stay on making Aadhaar number mandatory for allotment of PAN card and filing of ITR.  
However, the court upheld the validity of the I-T Act before its Constitution bench for examining whether the Aadhaar scheme infringes on the right to privacy and if there is any threat of data leakage.
