The Uncertain Deaths of the Sports Personalities

New Delhi: The recent incident brought shock waves in the sport federation of the nation. A tragic incident took place in Ranchi when Vishal Kumar Verma, a wrestler of national repute, died after being electrocuted in Jharkhand State Wrestling Association office, situated at the Jaipal Singh Stadium, earlier this month.

Verma had represented Jharkhand state at various championships since 2005 and had stood at fourth position in senior national level competition this year.

There has been many uncertain deaths of the sports personalities in past few decades. Some died on filed and few off the field. 

Most people want to die a peaceful death; usually while asleep. However, let’s look at a sports personalities from the last few decades that have been active and awake before the time of their death. All of these men died unexpectedly in between their career.

1. Phil Hughes (2014)
The Australia batsman was struck on the head by a bouncer during a Sheffield Shield match between South Australia and New South Wales. He fractured his skull and suffered massive bleeding in his brain and was operated upon in a Sydney hospital. Hughes died of his injuries two days later.

2. Darryn Randall (2013)
Randall was hit on the side of the head when attempting a pull shot in a South African domestic match. The wicketkeeper-batsman collapsed and was immediately rushed to hospital, but he died from the blow.

3. Raman Lamba (1998)
Lamba, a former India international, was hit on the head while fielding during a club match in Dhaka. He went into a coma three days later, before being pronounced dead.

4. Dale Earnhardt (2001)
One of the most popular NASCAR drivers in the sport's history -- and also one of its most polarizing forces -- Dale Earnhardt was a dominant force. In a 27-year NASCAR career, he picked up 76 wins and 428 top-10 finishes in addition to winning the series title a record seven times (tied with Richard Petty). The Intimidator died on the Daytona track on Feb. 18, 2001 when he crashed on the final lap of the Daytona 500 and fractured his skull. His death prompted numerous safety changes in NASCAR cars.

5. Nick Adenhart (2009)
After making his MLB debut the previous year, Los Angeles Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart was expected to excel in 2009. He went 3-0 in spring training, striking out 18 while walking only five batters to earn his starting spot. But his promising career was cut short when he was killed in a car crash on April 9, 2009. He was a passenger in a car that was struck by a drunk driver. Two other people were also killed in the crash. Just hours before the accident he had an impressive start, pitching a scoreless six innings.

6. Sean Taylor (2007)
The fifth overall pick of the 2004 NFL draft, Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor made an immediate impact in the pros, picking off four passes, forcing two fumbles and making 89 tackles his rookie year. After some troubles, he seems to be turning himself around in 2007. But during the season, on Nov. 27, he was shot to death by intruders at his Miami home. He was 24 years old. Taylor was posthumously voted to his second Pro Bowl.

7. Dale Earnhardt (2001)
He was an American race car driver that is known for driving stock cars in NASCAR’s top division. He is greatly known for his success in the Winston Cup Series. He won 76 races during his career and was able to take home seven championships. He stands with Richard Petty as the men with the most championships held during a career. His car slid off of the track and went on the flat apron, and then turned sharply back towards the outside retaining wall. Earnhardt died from his injuries sustained from crashing into the wall.

8. Wasim Raja (2006)
Pakistan cricketer Wasim Raja died of a heart attack when playing for Surrey Over 50s in Buckinghamshire.

9. Ian Folley (1993) 
Folley was hit by the ball below the eye accidentally while batting in a domestic match for Derbyshire against Workington and suffered a fatal heart attack in the hospital.

10. Richard Beaumont (2012)

Beaumont collapsed on the field after suffering a suspected heart attack and was declared dead after his arrival to hospital.


Death is something that most people fear, simply because nobody knows when they will die. Many aren’t afraid to die, but it’s safe to say that everybody gets uncomfortable thinking about it. While we may not know when or what is next, we do know that it is sure to come.

These were few players who never thought they will end like this. So was the case with Vishal Kumar Verma, a budding sports personality.
