Mumbai: Omicron BA.2 emerges as dominant strain of Covid-19; Delta pushed out

No Delta variant found in samples

Suresh Kakani, Additional Municipal Commissioner, was quoted by TOI as saying, "Omicron has pushed the Delta variant from the city. The maximum of the Covid samples was found to have BA.2 of Omicron variant." (sic)

No delta samples were found in the tenth round of genome sequencing and Omicron was present in 94.7 per cent in the ninth round of sequencing. In the eight round of genome sequencing, around 89 per cent of Omicron samples were found, he added.

5% fully vaccinated Omicron patients needed hospitalization

The data from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) revealed that only five per cent of the fully vaccinated persons who caught the Omicron variant infection in Mumbai needed hospitalization. Among the unvaccinated people or those infected with Omicron, more than 17 per cent had to be hospitalised. The data shows that samples of 237 people were found to be infected with the Omicron variant. Of these, 128 patients had taken both the doses, and only seven of them had to be hospitalized, including one in the ICU, while another needed oxygen support.

Mumbai did not report any Covid-19 deaths for the seventh consecutive day on Thursday, but recorded 80 new cases of the infection. With the addition of these cases, the city's caseload reached 10,56,729, while the death toll remained unchanged at 16,691.

A total of 118 patients were discharged during the day, which raised the recovery count to 10,36,5076. There are now 650 active cases in the metropolis, the civic body said in its report. The recovery rate of the state capital now stands at 98 per cent and no area or building is currently sealed in the city.
