House Democrats Eye Impeachment of Trump as Biden Forges Ahead With Transition

Democrats are increasingly eyeing a second impeachment of President Trump in the wake of Wednesday’s violent takeover of the Capitol by his supporters if Vice President Pence and Trump’s Cabinet officials do not remove him from office under the 25th Amendment.

President-elect Joe Biden is forging ahead with his transition to the White House, with plans to introduce more nominees during an event Friday in Wilmington, Del. The Democrat has nearly finished naming his Cabinet.

Trump promised a smooth transition in a video message posted Thursday on Twitter, saying that his supporters had pursued post-election challenges in good faith, but “now tempers must be cooled and calm restored.”

The nation’s top congressional Democrats — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (N.Y.) — demanded that he be removed from office for his role in the deadly storming of the U.S. Capitol by a pro-Trump mob.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao are among the latest Trump administration officials to announce their resignations in the wake of the assault on the Capitol.

Biden denounced what he described as an unequal justice system reflected in the lenient police response to the mostly White rioters who assaulted the Capitol, suggesting a stark contrast with the treatment of racial justice demonstrators across the country last summer.
