Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella initiated the Microsoft Build 2021 developers conference with a keynote address. In his speech, Nadella mentioned a host of updates that the tech major will be bringing soon across its products and services. A small mention therein was made for Microsoft Windows.
Nadella did not share any updates on Windows as such. Instead, he spoke of the company’s plans for the world-renowned operating system for the time to come. He mentioned that he has been testing “the next generation of Windows” in recent months and that the company will be bringing a significant update to Windows very soon.
As per Nadella, this important update will unlock “greater economic opportunity for developers and creators.” He promised that Microsoft’s ongoing work on Windows would create more opportunity for Windows developers and creators looking to build and distribute and monetize applications.
The statement is in line with the recent speculations of Microsoft working on a new app store for Windows. The company was known to be making efforts in this direction, and Nadella’s comments at building and monetizing applications and a general “economic opportunity” for developers hint that there will be a major overhaul in this regard.`
Speculations suggest that Microsoft will allow developers to submit any Windows application or even third-party commerce platforms in apps. This will allow developers to avoid Microsoft’s own 15 per cent cut on apps and 12 per cent cut on games.
As highlighted by The Verge, Nadella’s terminology to indicate the “next generation of Windows” is also interesting. This is because Microsoft mostly addresses the updates related to the latest version of its OS with “Windows 10.” The new moniker might mean that the company is going for a significant remake for Windows.
For now, all that is known is that the company will stop shipping its Windows 10X and brings its elements into the main version of Windows 10. No new updates have been shared around Windows for now, but it is expected that Microsoft will do so very soon.
