India's day on the second of the five-day game at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) meant Australia were on the backfoot on the second day of the Boxing Day Test. However, their bowlers didn't get that required support from their fielders as Australia dropped as many as five catches on the day.
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc felt that it wasn't their worst day on the field but it wasn't the best as well and the dropped catch by Travis Head on the last ball of the day summed up their day.
Mitchell Starc's bouncer rose awkwardly for stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahaneas he tried to duck but it hit his gloves and ballooned up in the air towards the point fielder. Travis Head ran towards the ball, grabbed it in the first attempt but couldn't hold on to it when he dived on the ground.
However, this wasn't the first drop of the day but was it the most important one? Certainly, since it was of the batsman, who was batting on 104.
As in the 91.3 overs, the duration for which Team India has batted Australia dropped five catches. Marnus Labuschagne, Tim Paine, Cameron Green and Steve Smith were the other culprits, as Shubman Gill and Ajinkya Rahane were dropped twice and Rishabh Pant was dropped once.
Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins were at the wrong end of the four catches of these, sharing two each.
Expressing his frustration about the same after the day's play, Starc said, "I think that last ball summed up our day."
Starc reckoned that they could have got Rahane out if they had hold on to their chances, which the bowlers created and they were many. However, he did praise India's stand-in skipper's gutsy knock.
“Not our worst day, but not our worst. We created a fair few chances but couldn’t hold onto those half ones. ‘Jinksy’ (Ajinkya Rahane) batted well. (I) thought there was some really good stuff from us but didn’t capitalise on a couple of chances.
“He batted well. We probably could’ve got him out three or four or five times. He’s run his luck, but it was a good hundred.”
Although, it wasn't all gloomy for the hosts as far as the catching was concerned as after dropping a chance of Gill, skipper Tim Paine pulled off an absolute blinder to send Cheteshwar Pujara back. However, the hosts still are behind in the game as India leade by 82 runs at the end of second day.
