Padma Bhushan for Foxconn CEO Young Liu

The Central government on Thursday awarded Padma Bhushan to Young Liu, the 66-year-old Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chairman of Taiwanese technology giant Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., commonly known as Foxconn.

According to the official website of the Foxconn Technology Group, Liu is a recognised entrepreneur and innovator with over four decades of industry experience.

He also founded three companies-- a motherboard company in 1988 known as Young Micro Systems; a northbridge and southbridge IC design company in 1995 focused on the PC chipset and an ITE Tech and an ADSL IC design company, ITeX in 1997.

Young Micro Systems was merged with Foxconn in 1994, and ITeX was successfully listed on NASDAQ in 2001.

The businessman from Taiwan earned his bachelor's degree in  Electrophysics in 1978 from Taiwan's National Chiao Tung University. He then moved to the University of Southern California where he earned his master's degree in Computer Engineering.

Foxconn (Hon Hai Precision Industry), has been rapidly expanding its presence in India, particularly in the southern region, with a series of significant investments and ventures.

The company, known for producing Apple iPhones, already operates an iPhone factory in Tamil Nadu employing nearly 40,000 individuals.

Last year, a senior official of Foxconn said the company is set to broaden its presence in India with a substantial investment of $1.6 billion for new construction projects
