India’s High-Stakes Balancing Act at the G20 Summit Through the Lens of EAM Jaishankar

The recent G20 summit in Delhi marked a milestone for India as it set the stage for significant global initiatives, orchestrated an intricate diplomatic ballet, and spotlighted the nation's growing international influence. The event was underscored by themes of sustainability, green development, and inclusivity, mirroring India's evolving global image.

India's diplomatic prowess was on full display at the summit. The nation's diplomats navigated the choppy waters of global politics, notably the tension surrounding Russia's war in Ukraine. Barely avoiding a diplomatic impasse, India managed to craft a joint declaration that addressed the conflict without explicitly condemning Russia, striking a delicate balance that won the approval of key allies such as Germany and the US.

India's commitment to sustainability and green development was a cornerstone of the summit. Agreements made included an action plan for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a Green Development Pact, and initiatives to reduce coal usage and promote renewable energy. The nation also spearheaded the LiFE Mission, an ambitious project aiming to connect railways, ports, electricity, data networks, and hydrogen pipelines across continents. Equally noteworthy was India's emphasis on inclusivity, as represented by the invitation to the African Union to become a permanent member of the G20. This move underlines the importance of including the Global South in multilateral forums, reasserting India's role as a leader of the Non-Aligned Movement.

However, the G20 summit was not without its controversies. India's silence on the escalating Palestine crisis raised eyebrows, especially given the significant Indian population in Islamic countries in the region. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the terror unleashed by Hamas, his failure to call for a peaceful solution to the Palestinian question has cast a shadow over India's claim to global leadership. This reticence, contrasted with the more statesmanlike responses from Russia and China, has sparked concerns about India's ability to navigate complex geopolitical issues while upholding its values and principles. As India's international profile continues to grow, its diplomatic strategies, commitment to sustainable and inclusive development, and handling of sensitive global issues will be key factors shaping its role on the world stage. The G20 summit has showcased India's potential to be a global leader, but it also underscored the challenges the nation must navigate in its quest for international influence.
