Venkaiah Naidu to be India’s 13th Vice President

New Delhi: Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu, the candidate of the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, will be India's next Vice President. 

Mr Naidu received 516 votes defeating the opposition's candidate, former West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, who got 244 votes. Mr Naidu, who defeated Mr Gandhi with a margin of 272 votes, received 68 per cent of votes in the polls held on Saturday.

A total of 771 of 785 possible votes, which is over 98 per cent, were cast by parliamentarians today. Of the 771 votes polled today, 770 were valid and 1 was invalid.

In the 545-member LokSabha, the BJP has 281 members. The NDA led by BJP, has 338 members. In the 245-member RajyaSabha, the BJP has 58 members making it the single-largest party, while the Congress has 57. 

Mr Naidu will take oath as Vice President on August 11th.
