GURGAON: Due to unprecedented floods, the up-market suburb of national Capital, Gurgaon hit the headlines last year. The daylong deluge happened due to the failure of the sewage system of the city.
Gurgaon has been surviving without a ‘functioning’ municipal government for roughly about four decades now. The inadequate infrastructure not just on the surface but also below the ground makes the case even worse. All these together result in heavy traffic jams especially during monsoon. In many places sewage systems are not even linked with townships of different HUDA sectors.
According to conservative estimates, over 100 colonies, including condominiums are still not connected to the master lines. The city has two STPs, Behrampur and Dhanwapur, with a capacity of 118 million liters daily and if all the private colonies are linked to it, it will choke.
“There is no connection with Huda lines, during monsoon it gets absolutely in livable.” said Malkhan Singh, Vice president, Sector 23A.
All these have come out as a serious issue from past few decades especially after heavy downpour in the city.
“Whenever it rains, it gets really problematic for me to reach my office on time. I need to go to Noida everyday and for that I need to take the metro which is hardly 20 minutes away from my house. But whenever it rains in Gurgaon all the roads are jammed, road sides are filled with sewage gutter water and at the end it takes me more than 1 and a half hour to reach the metro station,” Says Kajal Tomar, an industrial intern.
The monsoons are yet to start in the capital and people of Gurgaon have not really recovered from the memories of last year’s water logging as well as choked sewage system of the city. The few downpours this summer has already given a brief picture of what is in the box ahead.
“Gurgaon will not face any difficulties this monsoon. Commissioner of Police, Sandeep Khirwar has formed different teams to tackle traffic jams. Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon, Huda as well as the district administration is ready. Many new water suction pumps are bought to avoid water lodging in the city. Regular cleaning of gutters and sewage system is in progress so that no chocking of sewage system happens this time,” said Satya Rohilla, Public Relation Officer Municipal Corporation, Gurgaon.
