New Delhi: Indian Medical Association has demanded absolute end to the violent episodes taking place against the Healthcare providers. IMA has also resolved zero tolerance to any sort of violence against the fraternity. IMA has expressed serious concern about inexcusable and shameful inhuman attacks on doctors, nurses & hospital staff.

This was the opinion at the day-long seminar organized by the IMA at the New Delhi on May 26. The day-long deliberations spread over three sessions and had speakers from various fields of the society. The deliberations were inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Anil Baijal and had Justice BN Krishna among the other speakers. 

New Delhi: A recent research has indicated that over hydration or excess fluid accumulation can lead to dangerously low sodium levels in the blood or result in brain swelling, especially in the elderly and other susceptible individuals

Over hydration activates Trpv4 - a calcium channel that can be found in glial cells, that act to surround hydration sensing neurons. It is a cellular gatekeeper implicated in maintaining the balance of water in the body.

Hyponatremia occurs when the concentration of sodium in the blood is abnormally low. Sodium is an electrolyte, and it helps regulate the amount of water in and around cells. When one drinks too much water, it simultaneously leads to a rise in the body's water levels, and the cells begin to swell. This swelling can cause many health problems, from mild to life-threatening.

New Delhi: The state of Kerala has reported an outbreak of a new viral infection, the death toll due to which has already reached nine. This virus-induced fever is being attributed to the Nipah virus (NiV), which causes high fatality rate and spreads mainly through bats, pigs and other animals. NiV was first identified during an outbreak of disease that took place in Kampung Sungai Nipah, Malaysia in 1998, with pigs as the intermediate hosts.

NiV infection is a newly-emerging zoonosis (a disease which can be transmitted to humans from animals) that causes severe disease in both animals and humans. The natural host of the virus is fruit bats of the Pteropodidae Family, Pteropus genus.

New Delhi: As per a status report on the prevalence of congenital heart disease (CHD) in the country, the infant mortality rate (IMR) currently stands at 34 per 1000 live births. Approximately 10% of this may be accounted for by congenital heart diseases (CHD) alone. Every year, 1.5 lakh infants are born with CHD, of which 78,000 do not survive. As per the Children’s Heart Foundation, globally, 1 in 100 babies is born with a CHD and about 25% of them have critical CHD.

CHD occurs due to a problem with the structure of the heart. It is the most common type of birth defect. The defects can involve the walls of the heart, the valves, and the arteries and veins near the heart.

New Delhi: Statistics indicate that 15% of all strokes are caused by hemorrhagic stroke when a blood vessel in the brain bursts, leading to permanent damage. While all people with acute stroke benefit from treatment on a stroke unit, there is currently no specific treatment for hemorrhagic stroke and unfortunately many people affected will die within a few days.

A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when blood from an artery begins bleeding into the brain. Pressure from the leaked blood damages brains cells, and, as a result, the damaged area is unable to function properly.
