Used the human shield to protect Kashmiris from bullets, says Major Gogoi

New Delhi: Major NitinLeetulGogoi, the Indian Army officer who used a Kashmiri man as human shield on his jeep to thwart a stone-pelting mob, on Tuesday said he did that to "save more lives". "I did this (tie Farooq Dar on the bonnet of my jeep) to save more lives of the local people," the 53 Rashtriya Rifles Major told reporters, a day after he was given the Army Chief's Commendation Card for "sustained efforts" in counter insurgency operations. "If I had ordered firing then more casualties would have been there," Gogoi said, recalling the events of April 9 during the by-election in Srinagar.

Court asks CBI to act against Tytler for furnishing false info before passport office

A special court in Delhi today directed CBI to take action against Congress leader Jagdish Tytler for allegedly furnishing false information before the passport office while applying for renewal of the document. 
Special Judge Bharta Parashar also handed over Tytler's passport to the CBI.
The matter came into light after Tytler withdrew from the court his application seeking a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the renewal of his passport.

Digital India made 82 lakh people digitally literate: Prasad

Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said today that 82 lakh people have been made digitally literate under the Digital India initiative. 

Addressing media on the achievements of his Ministry in the last three years of the Narendra Modi Government, the minister said IT industry has done a great job in empowering Indians. He said the current investment in electronics is now one lakh 43 thousand crore rupees.

Sr RJD leader Prabhunath Singh gets life in 1995 murder case

Senior RJD leader and four-time MP Prabhunath Singh has been sentenced to life by a Jharkhand court, which found him guilty for murder of the then MLA Ashok Singh in 1995. The Hazaribagh Court convicted him along with two others - his brother and a former mukhiya. 
The RJD leader and his brother were arrested soon after the court found them guilty and are now lodged in Hazaribagh Central Jail. Initially, the case was heard in Patna but the Supreme Court transferred it to Hazaribagh, thus accepting the plea of relatives of the slain MLA who feared Prabhunath could influence court proceedings.

Death toll rises to 22 in Manchester Arena terror attack

The death toll in Manchester Arena terror attack in UK rose to 22. Greater Manchester Police said 59 people were also injured in the suicide attack which took place around 3 am Indian time today. 
The attacker also died while detonating the device. Witnesses said they heard two loud bangs, in the foyer area of Manchester Arena, after a pop concert by Ariana Grande. Manchester Victoria station, has been closed and all trains cancelled.
British Home Secretary Amber Rudd condemned the attack calling it barbaric, deliberately targeting some of the most vulnerable in our society. Relatives are using social media to hunt for missing loved ones, including children, caught up in the incident.
