CBI Blames Delay In 138 Cases On Corruption On Stay Orders Taken From Apex Court

New Delhi: The CBI has said that the Supreme Court`s stay on 45 appeals despite a statutory ban on higher courts staying trial in corruption cases, resulted in trials in 138 cases under Prevention of  Corruption Act getting stalled. 

Solicitor general Ranjit Kumar informed a bench of Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justice D Y Chandrachud that some of these appeals were pending in the SC for the last 15 years and CBI investigating officers now feared that any further delay in restarting the trials would result in losing evidence.

Geelani aide Devinder Singh Behal passed secret information to Pakistan

New Delhi: Devinder Singh Behal, a close aide of Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani was allegedly in touch with people in the Pakistani high commission here and may have leaked national secrets, including Indian troop movement details, to the ISI.

NIA had raided his premises were on Sunday in the J&K terror funding case. "We suspect that Behal, who has been in close contact with people in Pakistan HC, was passing on classified information to alleged ISI moles, putting national security at risk. This is a serious offence and a potential ground to charge him under Section 121 of IPC (waging war against the state)," a senior NIA officer said.

Abdul Kalam Memorial In Fresh Row

New Delhi: The imposing memorial of former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 27 here found itself at the centre of a controversy on Sunday with the Hindu Makkal Katchi (HMK) strongly objecting to the placing of the Quran and the Bible next to a model of the Bhagavad Gita that was part of the small podium on which the statue of the former president has been erected.

The holy books were placed on the podium by Kalam’s family members. The row was initially triggered by protests by MDMK chief Vaiko and leaders of other political parties who questioned the propriety of designing Kalam’s statue with Bhagavad Gita given the late leader’s image as someone who was above religion.

I-T returns filing deadline extended to August 5; Aadhaar-PAN linking till August 31

New Delhi: Under pressure to push back the July 31 deadline for filing income tax returns due to the inability of the online server to handle the traffic on the last day, the Income Tax Department on Monday announced the extension of the deadline to August 5.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on Monday extended the linking of Aadhaar with PAN (Permanent Account Number) till August 31. The income tax returns will be processed after the linking, a release said.

Patna High Court Rejects PILs Challenging Nitish Kumar-led Govt In Bihar

New Delhi: The Patna High Court today rejected two PILs challenging the formation of the new government by Nitish Kumar's JD(U) along with the BJP. After hearing all parties, a division bench comprising Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice AK Upadhyay dismissed the PILs saying that no intervention of the court is required after the Floor Test in the State Assembly. 

One PIL was filed by RJD MLAs Saroj Yadav and Chandan Kumar, while the other was filed by Jitendra Kumar, who holds allegiance to Samajwadi Party. They were against the Governor's decision not to invite RJD, the single largest party to form the government.
