#CoalCrisis: Shortage of Coal Supply Triggers Power Tussle Between Chattigarh And Rajasthan

in DNDNews

The coal crisis in the country has sparked a ‘power struggle’, literally, between two Congress-administered states. Rajasthan, which suffered widespread blackouts due to fuel shortage at its power stations in recent months, has knocked at the Centre’s doors, saying the Chhattisgarh government is stalling plans to start two coal blocks and raise production from two other mines.

After repeated requests to the Chhattisgarh forest department for clearance went unheeded, Rajasthan additional chief secretary Subodh Agarwal has sought the intervention of coal and power secretaries Anil Jain and Alok Kumar, respectively. In separate letters to Jain and Kumar, Agarwal has stressed the need for the Centre to weigh in on the Chhattisgarh government to take early action needed to start/raise production from the mines to ensure Rajasthan’s energy security.

"The BJP government in Uttar Pradesh took five years to complete the remaining works of Saryu Nahar National Project which was three-fourth completed during the SP government," Akhilesh tweeted in Hindi, hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's arrival in Balrampur here to inaugurate the project.

#SeditionLaw: Centre Says Won't Repeal The Law, As Supreme Court Question Its Need

in DNDNews

There is no proposal under consideration currently to scrap the law on sedition, law minister Kiren Rijiju said in Lok Sabha on Friday. He, however, said “the question of law” regarding Section 124-A was pending adjudication before the Supreme Court. In response to a question in the House on whether the government was planning to strike down the sedition laws in view of an adverse observation by the Supreme Court, the minister said there was no such proposal under consideration of the government at present.

The SC had asked questions about the law saying the sedition law was a colonial law. “Do we still need the law in our country after 75 years of Independence?” the court had said. However, the issue remains contested with the case being made out that “anti-national” activities need to be covered by some law.
