ICC mulls regular Test matches for non-WTC Full Members and Associates in next FTP cycle

in SPORTS

An enhanced structure for more multi-day cricket for Full Members outside the World Test Championship (WTC) and Associates could be a possibility in the next cricket calendar. Though the discussions, which took place last week at the ICC's scheduling meeting, are at a very formative stage, they took inthe possibility of revisiting a past effort to form a second division for Test cricket.

According to multiple sources, such a format could be a blended structure combining Afghanistan, Ireland and Zimbabwe - who play Tests but are not part of the WTC - and Associates with ODI status including Netherlands, Scotland and potentially others.

VVS Laxman refuses to compare youngsters with legends, 'There can only be one Kapil Dev, MS Dhoni and Sunil Gavaskar'

in SPORTS

Saying that comparison with greats can only put pressure on the young cricketers, former India batsman VVS Laxman said there can only be one Kapil Dev, MS Dhoni or Sunil Gavaskar.

Hardik Pandya has often attracted comparisons with the great Kapil Dev, mainly because of his abilities to win matches for India both with the bat and ball. Without naming Hardik, Laxman said: "I just feel that there can be only one Kapil. It (comparison) will put undue pressure on the player. There can be only one MS Dhoni, or one Sunil Gavaskar.

Ravindra Jadeja regrets getting out in the 2019 World Cup semi-finals, 'I wanted to win for my country'

in SPORTS

In a candid conversation with Indian women’s cricketer Jemimah Rodrigues, Ravindra Jadeja revealed that he regrets getting out in the 2019 World Cup semi-finals against New Zealand.

When asked if he could go back in history and choose to win the WC semis in either 2016 or 2019, Jadeja instantly chose the latter and said, “I was playing well in that particular game. We were almost about to win the game but then I got out! That’s the game I wanted to win for my country.”

Further diving deep in nostalgia, Jadeja also chose his first IPL win when he donned Rajasthan Royals colours under Shane Warne ahead of the championship CSK won, when they made a comeback in 2018.

T10 format could be vehicle for cricket's return to Olympics, as ICC step up interest

in SPORTS

Cricket's return to the Olympics is moving closer, with the possibility that it could do so in the T10 format. That has emerged in the wake of the ICC's scheduling meetings for a new calendar from 2023 onwards, which took place last week, with the BCCI and ECB, two key boards in any push, showing renewed commitment to exploring ways to make it happen.

Both the ECB and the BCCI have historically had reservations about the sport's involvement in the tournament. However, Tom Harrison, the ECB's chief executive, is understood to have raised the subject in last week's meetings of the ICC's chief executives' committee, which was centred on agreeing the international calendar from 2023 to 2031. The idea was generally well received.

The ICC meeting was followed by a meeting of the Apex Council of the BCCI, which also gave conditional support to cricket's inclusion in the Games. The BCCI have long been unconvinced by their need for involvement in the Olympics and were reluctant to cede any authority of the sport to the Indian Olympic Association. At this stage, they appear confident their power will not be diluted. The BCCI have also confirmed they will send a women's team to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022.
