Central govt raises red flag as Bengal allots medical seats to Ukraine returnees

In what could become another Centre-State flashpoint, the West Bengal government has allotted seats to second-and third-year medical students from Ukraine even as the country's apex medical education regulator maintained that it is not allowed.

Students who complete their education in such a manner cannot apply for the screening test that every foreign medical graduate has to take before practising in India, officials from the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the Health Ministry told The Indian Express.

On April 28, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had announced that her government would accommodate 412 students who were forced to return to the state from Ukraine following the Russian invasion. She also lashed out at the Centre for "not taking any responsibility" for these students.

Maharashtra: Trouble in MVA, Congress neta says NCP out to decimate it

Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole issued a veiled threat to NCP about the continuation of the three-party MVA government on Monday. Patole, who had said last week that NCP had backstabbed his party by allying with BJP for the Gondia and Bhandara zilla parishad polls, said he had briefed Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi on “NCP’s activities to weaken the Congress” during the party’s Chintan Shivir in Udaipur.

Asked if there was a threat to the existence of the MVA government, Patole said anything could happen since, in the last two-and-a-half years, NCP “had taken all possible steps to wipe out Congress from the state”. “Anything can happen, it is for the Congress high command to take a decision,” he told TOI.

Congress leader P Chidambaram asks why can't a 40-year-old be Congress president

In an interview to national magazine, the veteran leader of Congress explains why the party needs to nurture younger leaders.

On being asked why is the Congress facing an existential crisis, Chidambram says that the Congress is a natural party of governance. We know how to run a government. But when we run the government, we fail to run the party. Most senior leaders are inducted into the government and not spared for party work. When Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh were prime ministers, we neglected the party organisation. Because the party machinery and work were neglected, when we are in the Opposition, the party organisation has not picked up the responsibilities or carried the party's message and narrative.
