Members of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedika, a pro-Kannada activist group, were detained on
Wednesday after they vandalised some stores in Bengaluru demanding Kannada nameplates to
be put up abiding by the guidelines of the civic authority. Several videos of their rampage on
Bengaluru streets, in front of Phoenix Mall of Asia, went viral. Karnataka Rakshana Vedika
president TN Narayan Gowda said his organisation organised an awareness protest rally about
the 60% Kannada on signboard rule which is a government law. Some social media accounts
claimed nameplates which had Kannada apart from English were also vandalised.
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday shared pictures from his visit to the Virendra Akhara
in the Chhara village of Haryana during which he wrestled with Olympic medalist Bajrang
Punia. The Congress leader shared multiple pictures on the micro-blogging site, with a caption
hinting at the ongoing row over the election and the subsequent suspension of the Wrestling
Federation of India (WFI) by the Sports Ministry.
Federalism is a part of the basic structure of the Indian Constitution and it will not be diluted merely because the expression ‘central government’ is used and not ‘Union government’, the Delhi high court recently held while dismissing a PIL.
A division bench of acting chief justice Manmohan and Justice Mini Pushkarna rejected the contention that the use of the expression ‘central government’ in legislations and official communications gives the wrong impression that state governments are subordinate to the Union government.
The Maryada Purushottam Shri Ram International Airport in Ayodhya, which is set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 30, is equipped to handle 500 domestic passengers during peak hours and over four million flyers annually, officials familiar with the details said on Tuesday.
The officials also said that the airport, which has been built by government-owned Airports Authority of India (AAI) at a cost of ₹350 crore, currently has a runway suitable for the operation of Airbus A321 and Boeing 737 type of aircraft. The runway may be expanded in subsequent phases to allow wider aircraft to operate, the officials said.
