India’s CPI inflation eases to 4.25 per cent in May from 4.70 per cent in April

India's retail inflation dropped to 4.25per cent in May from 4.7 per cent in April, according to a data from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on Monday. The consumer price-based index (CPI) inflation in May is lowest in 25 months. The food inflation also eased to 2.91 per cent in April. It was 3.84 per cent in the month of April. The food basket accounts for nearly half of the CPI. While, inflation in fuel and light also eased to 4.64 per cent, from 5.52 per cent in April.

It was for the second month in a row that retail inflation remained within the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)'s comfort zone of below six per cent. Despite the huge 227-basis-point fall since January, CPI inflation remains above the central bank's medium-term target of 4 per cent for the 44th month in a row.

MPC may not go for rate cut before February 2024: HDFC Securities

The RBI MPC left the repo rates unchanged at 6.5 percent at its meeting on June 08, as the Street had expected. The MPC continued with the ‘withdrawal of accommodation’ stance, as liquidity has turned into a significant surplus mode, further increased by the impact of deposits of Rs 2000 notes.

A change in policy stance at this juncture might not be in sync with the current liquidity conditions. Headline CPI is still higher than the medium-term target of 4 percent, even on a 12-month forecast horizon. A sustained moderation in inflation may prompt the shift from a “withdrawal of accommodation” to a “neutral” stance.

Union Minister Rajeev Chandrashekar on Friday hits out at former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajan. The minister while talking to reporters slammed Rajan. He said, "I think he (Rajan) should decide whether he is a politician...a failed politician or a failed economist. "We all know that when he (Raghuram Rajan) was the RBI governor, he wrecked the entire banking system," the minister added.

The minister has also hit out at the Congress government in Karnataka over reports about it removing a lesson on RSS founder Keshav Baliram Hedgewar from school textbooks, saying the party's views on history are limited to the Nehru-Gandhi family.
