Sunil Gavaskar did not mince his words while talking about India's defeat in the World Test Championship final against Australia and went on to mention MS Dhoni's name while talking about Indian cricket's history. The India legend asked for the captain to be held accountable for the defeats.

Speaking at the Indian Express Idea Exchange, Gavaskar mentioned that the captains have their job secured, irrespective of the results. Gavaskar also took a subtle dig at MS Dhoni without mentioning his name.

“That kind of thing doesn’t happen. Whether you win or lose, the captain knows that he is going to be there. This has not been a recent case, mind you. This has been happening since 2011. There have been results where we have been wiped out in the series 0-4, 0-4 but the captain hasn’t changed,” the former India captain said.

Dhoni was the captain of Team India when the side lost to England (0-4) and Australia (0-4) in the 2011/12 season. After the highs of winning the World Cup, Indian cricket hit rock bottom and the visitors returned home without even a single win against England in any format.

India lost all four Tests against Australia in 2011/12 (one defeat came under Virender Sehwag). The Men in Blue also failed to reach the final of the tri-series. Later in 2012, Dhoni-led India suffered a shocking 1-2 defeat against England in the home Test series.

Despite that, Dhoni retained his captaincy till 2014. He announced a shocking retirement from the longest format of the game in December 2014. He was replaced by Virat Kohli, who ended his captaincy career as the most successful Indian skipper.

Rohit Sharma replaced Virat as the Test captain in 2022 and continues to lead the team. It was under Rohit's captaincy that India lost to Australia in the 2023 WTC Final. India also lost the 2021 WTC Final, against New Zealand, under Virat.
