New Delhi: Seven people, including four tourists from Delhi and three tourist guides, were killed in a Gandola cable car accident at world famous ski resort of Gulmarg in Baramulla district on Sunday afternoon. Officials said, the cable car came crashing down after a ropeway snapped in midair when a tree, uprooted by strong winds, fell on the ropeway connecting Gulmarg base camp with Affarwat, the highest skiing point.
Senior Superintendent of Police Baramulla, ImtiyazHussain, said all the stranded tourists numbering over 100 have been rescued and the cable is being restored to get the cars running again. Two other injured were taken to a hospital in Srinagar.
Since its inauguration in 1998, it is the first of its kind of incident in the Gulmarg cable car service, which was built by a French firm. The cable car has the capacity to ferry 600 people in one hour.
