Sonia meets leaders today to cobble together Opposition to Kovind

New Delhi: Opposition parties are meeting in New Delhi on Thursday to discuss the Presidential election and their choice of Presidential candidate. Congress President Sonia Gandhi has convened a meeting of opposition leaders in this regard.

Congress has said that decision by the BJP to choose Ram NathKovind as the NDA nominee for Presidential elections was taken unilaterally. Senior party leader GhulamNabi Azad had alleged that name of Kovind was not discussed with Congress Party.

According to media reports, former LokSabhaSpeaker and Congress leader Meira Kumar is being considered as one of the candidates by the opposition.She met Ms Gandhi at her residence in New Delhi on Wednesday. However, a final decision will be only made after meeting of opposition parties this evening. 

Meanwhile, JD(U) spokesperson KC Tyagi said they will not attend the meeting called by Gandhi as the party has already decided to support NDA candidate in the Presidential election. However, RJD Chief Lalu Prasad Yadavhas categorically said that his party will go by the decision of the opposition parties meeting. 

Talking to reporters in Patna Yadavsaid the party was always with secular forces and no question arose to tie up with feudal forces.

In a related development, AIADMK (Amma) faction, led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami announced its support for NDA candidate.The support came after Prime Minister NarendraModi rang up Palaniswami to seek his party's votes for the National Democratic Alliance nominee.
