Nightmare of Travelling on a Metro Service Liable to Breakdown Anywhere, Anytime

New Delhi: The Metro services in the national Capital are going from bad to worse. And when there is breakdown, the lifeline of the national capital region snaps. This may not be understood by Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu or by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who are partners in the Metro operations.
This trauma once again visited metro travellers on Tuesday, when services on the Blueline snapped. Metro commuters in the national capital faced a difficult time as trains on the over-crowded Noida Line started getting delayed especially during what’s called the busy “office hour”. The Blue Line, which runs over 50 kilometres, is the longest metro corridor in Delhi NCR connecting Noida/Vaishali on the eastern periphery with Dwarka on the western fringes of the megapolis.

The Metro, which carriesnearly 30 lakh passengers a day, is the lifeline of the city and is crucial especially in the peak evening hours for office goers returning home.
On Tuesday as the service snapped no one had a clue of what awaited them as there were no announcements from the side of metro officials, leading to long queues on platforms. Meanwhile, many passengers who got tired of waiting for train finally decided to get out of Metro stations to look for other modes of transport.
Rajiv Chowk, Yamuna Bank, Mandi House and Barakhamba Road were the worst affected stations. They witnessed scenes of chaos as crowds swelled on the platforms because of the extremely slow movement of trains.
When I boarded a train from Noida Sector 15 station, the frequency of the arrival of trains had already dropped, just one rack arrived in 25 minutes. As I boarded the trained I heaved a sigh relief, “Thank God! It was finally moving and I’ll reach to my destination almost on time.” But that was not to be as the train stopped for at least 15 minutes at each station and it took me more than an hour to reach Rajiv Chowk and almost 3hours to reach Dwarka Sector 21.
Usually it takes 1hour and 30 minutes to reach Dwarka sector 21 from Noida sector 15 but on Tuesday it took more than the double time. I was sacred as it was already 8.30 by that time and I had to reach home alone through secluded roads.
It was very disappointing because technical glitches in metro service have become a routine affair now that needs to be rectified soon. On this Metro officials say the situation is unlikely to improve anytime soon. “Due to electrical short-circuiting caused by an eagle, the insulator of OHE flashed and broke. It caused OHE entanglement with train passing under it."
On the other hand, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has also said that delays on the line are mostly because its signal system is outdated.
“The technology keeps changing. We used the best that was available at that time but now there are better systems available,” said Sharat Sharma, director (operations), DMRC, was quoted in media reports.
