New Delhi: All the government offices in Darjeeling opened on Tuesday, after the first day of the indefinite bandh called by Gorkha Janmukti Morcha passed off peacefully on Monday.
The Darjeeling hills remained largely peaceful during the bandh except for a few stray incidents and the detention of GJM supporters by the police in the morning.
However, life in Darjeeling came to a complete standstill with all the shops and commercial establishment remaining shut. The bandh supporters ransacked the offices of PWD, Electricity department and Gram Panchayats in other parts of the districts. The headquarters of the hill district remained incident free.
According to the news reports, agitators tried to set fire to the BDO office at Bijanbari while the supporters barged inside the PWD and Electricity department offices situated in Kurseong and Kalimpong area.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed strong resentment over the bandh. She said in Kolkata, “Only a handful leaders of Morcha are trying to create troubles in the hills while majority of the local people do not support the disruptive activities.” On the other hand, the Morcha leader, Roshan Giri said, “Their movement is totally democratic and they did not indulge in violence.”
