
New Delhi: The situation in West Bengal`s Darjeeling hills continued to be tense. A day after Darjeeling and adjoining areas that witnessed sporadic clashes, where the GJM supporters were protesting against alleged "imposition of Bengali language in the schools in the hills" on Thursday.
The areas remained tense on Friday and Over 10,000 tourists were stranded in Darjeeling as GorkhaJanmuktiMorcha has called for 'bandh' till 6 pm in protest against lathicharge on its supporters. Even as a team of special auditors appointed by the Bengal Government to probe the finances of GJM-ruled Gorkhaland Territorial Authority reached the disturbed zone.
The state government called out the Army in Darjeeling on Thursday after the GJM protest against the “forced imposition of Bengali language’’ in state schools turned violent with police vehicles being torched and policemen attacked.
MamtaBanerjee on this described the 12-hour-long strike called by the GJM as “illegal”, stating that the government will take stern action against those participating in it.
