New Delhi: Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, 93, was rushed to All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi on Monday. His condition is said to be critical. PM Narendra Modi, Congress president Rahul Gandhi and BJP chief Amit Shah visited him at the hospital.

AIIMS said the former PM has been diagnosed with a urinary tract infection and was under “investigation and evaluation”. Union health minister JP Nadda said during a press conference that Vajpayee was at the hospital for regular examination. Vajpayee is currently stable and under the care of a team of doctors headed by AIIMS director Dr Randeep Guleria, a pulmonologist, the hospital said. The team of doctors also includes a nephrologist, Dr Soumita Bagchi and a gastroenterologist, Dr Pramod Garg.

In a health bulletin released Monday, the hospital said Vajpayee has been diagnosed with “a urinary tract infection for which appropriate treatment has been closely monitored and treated by a team of doctors”.

“PM @narendramodi visited former Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee at AIIMS today. He was at AIIMS for about 50 minutes...The Prime Minister interacted with family members of Shri Vajpayee. He also spoke to doctors and enquired about the health of Shri Vajpayee,” the Prime Minister’s Office tweeted.

Rahul Gandhi was among the first to visit Vajpayee in the afternoon. Vajpayee’s former colleagues, senior BJP leaders LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi, home minister Rajnath Singh and Nadda also visited the hospital.

Vajpayee, who was prime minister for a full term between 1998 and 2004, had a stroke in 2009, which impaired his speech. He was awarded India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 2015.
